Guelma Roman Theatre Festival in Guelma
A cultural festival staged inside Guelma's Roman theatre, the only ancient theatre in Algeria fully rebuilt rather than left as ruins, restored under French archaeologist Stephane Gsell and hosting performances since its first modern show in May 1908, continuing more than a century of the venue's own artistic festival tradition.
Guelma's Roman theatre, built at the site of ancient Calama where Saint Possidius, biographer and student of Saint Augustine, once served as bishop, stands as the only Roman theatre in Algeria to have been fully rebuilt rather than left as ruins, a restoration project supervised by French archaeologist Stephane Gsell that culminated in the venue's first modern performance in May 1908.
