Tamanrasset Imzad Festival

A festival in Tamanrasset dedicated to the imzad, a single-stringed instrument played exclusively by Tuareg women that nearly vanished before a 2003 revival effort eventually achieved UNESCO recognition, showcasing an active cultural revitalization project alongside performances of the instrument's traditional poetic and ceremonial repertoire today.

The imzad, a single-stringed bowed instrument played exclusively by Tuareg women, sat with the instrument's rounded gourd-shell body resting on their knees, nearly vanished by the early twenty-first century, with only two women in Algeria still able to play it before the Save the Imzad association formed in 2003 to revive the tradition, an effort that achieved UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition roughly a decade later for the practices and knowledge linked to the imzad across Tuareg communities in Algeria, Mali and Niger.
