Luanda Island Feast in Ilha de Luanda
A multi-day arts, food and music gathering each November on Luanda's Ilha peninsula, rooted in offerings made to Kianda, a Kimbundu water spirit associated with calm seas and good fishing, and historically intertwined with the Catholic Procession of Our Lady of the Cape. Recent editions lean more toward crafts and food stalls than the fuller processions of past decades.
Long before it became a strip of bars and beach clubs, Ilha de Luanda belonged to the axiluanda, an Ambundu fishing community whose descendants still work these waters, and whose ancestors carried offerings to Kianda, a water spirit Angolan coastal tradition credits with calming the bay and filling the nets.
