The story

Anguilla Regatta in Road Bay/Sandy Ground

A May sailing regatta out of Road Bay and Sandy Ground with 15 to 22 mile offshore courses, rooted in the informal fishing-boat races that began Anguilla's entire sailing tradition in the salt-trade era, formalized by North Hill residents on an August Monday generations before today's modern May date.

The Anguilla Regatta traces its lineage back to the island's salt-trading era, when Sandy Ground, the strip of sand separating the Road Salt Pond from Road Bay, served as the loading point for schooners carrying Anguillian salt north to Canada.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Anguilla Regatta's direct historical link to Sandy Ground's salt-trading past, born from fishermen racing home to sell their catch fresh, gives it a depth of local history rare among Caribbean sailing events

02

The mystery stays covered

Its longer, offshore-style courses of fifteen to twenty-two miles also set it apart from the shorter inshore A Class races of the island's traditional August boat-racing season, offering visitors a genuinely different style of sailing spectacle to watch from the shore
