The Sandy Island Race starts simultaneously from the Antigua Yacht Club line at Falmouth Harbour and the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club line on the opposite side of the island, with both fleets meeting mid-course at Sandy Island's turning mark on a circular route scored in two separately corrected legs, originated by sailor Richard Archer and jointly organised by the two yacht clubs as one of Antigua's most anticipated January sailing fixtures.

The Sandy Island Race starts with two gun shots rather than one: the first from the Antigua Yacht Club line at Falmouth Harbour, the second from the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club line on the opposite side of the island, sending boats out simultaneously from both ends of Antigua toward a shared circular course.
