The story

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in Nelson's Dockyard/English Harbour

The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta split off from Antigua Sailing Week in 1988 when classic yacht owners wintering in Antigua created a regatta dedicated to classic wooden boats, now hosted annually every April by the Antigua Yacht Club in English Harbour against the backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nelson's Dockyard, drawing J Class yachts, schooners, ketches, yawls, sloops and spirit-of-tradition designs from around the world.

The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta grew out of Antigua Sailing Week's own classic-boat fleet, formally splitting off as its own independent event in 1988 when a group of classic yacht owners and skippers who had been wintering in Antigua decided to create a regatta dedicated specifically to classic wooden boats.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few regattas anywhere are dedicated as specifically to classic and traditionally rigged vessels as this one, drawing J Class yachts, schooners and spirit-of-tradition designs rather than modern racing boats

02

The mystery stays covered

Staging the event at Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also gives it a historic setting where the restored wooden vessels on the water visibly echo the stone naval architecture on shore

03

The city starts moving

Having grown from a small gathering of wintering classic-boat owners in 1988 into one of the world's premier classic yacht events also reflects a rare, sustained trajectory of growth within a genuinely niche sailing category
