National Calf and Branding Festival in Ayacucho

A rural Buenos Aires province festival in Ayacucho, running since 1969 and rooted in a private ranch tradition dating to 1967. Its centerpiece is the yerra, a public demonstration of traditional calf-branding, paired with jineteada horsemanship competitions that drew a crowd of more than 20,000 to the very first official edition.

Two cattle-ranching brothers, the Aráoz family, hosted an informal calf-marking gathering on their San Bernardo ranch near Ayacucho in 1967, and within two years that private tradition had become an official provincial event: the first Fiesta Nacional del Ternero y Día de la Yerra was inaugurated on May 3 and 4, 1969, with the province's governor, Oscar Alende, presiding.
