National Salmon Festival in Camarones
A small Patagonian coastal town's celebration of deep-sea and shore salmon fishing, running since 1980 and nationally recognized since 1990. Dozens of competing boats chase salmon off Chubut's Atlantic coast, and the week closes with a communal fish stew cooked from a large share of the catch.
Camarones closes its salmon festival with a communal lunch called the Chupin del Pescador, a fish stew for which organizers report cooking around a thousand kilos of salmon in a single sitting -- a scale that reflects how central salmon fishing is to this small Chubut coastal town, which brands itself the National Capital of Salmon.
