A midwinter festival in the world's southernmost city marking the winter solstice's barely-seven-hour day, built around cultural, culinary and craft activities distributed across town rather than one headline concert, with roots in 1970s community gatherings and National Festival status since the mid-1980s, with all programming free and open to the public in a small city whose winter tourism otherwise centers on skiing at nearby Cerro Castor.
Ushuaia loses the sun for barely seven hours around June 21 each year, and rather than treat the winter solstice as something to endure, the city built a festival around it: the Fiesta Nacional de la Noche Mas Larga, marking the longest night of the year in the southernmost city on the planet at the latitude where it falls hardest.
