Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates roughly 2,600 cherry trees planted around Hirosaki Castle, one of only twelve surviving original castle towers in Japan, starting with a 1715 planting by the ruling Tsugaru clan. The organized public festival, running since 1918, spans mid-April through early May and draws more than two million visitors during its two-week run.

Hirosaki Castle's association with cherry blossoms began in 1715, when the ruling Tsugaru clan planted twenty-five kasumizakura cherry saplings brought from Kyoto around the castle grounds, a gesture that started what would become one of Japan's most celebrated cherry-viewing traditions.
