The story

Rochester Lilac Festival in Rochester

The Rochester Lilac Festival takes place each May in Highland Park, Rochester, New York, where roughly 1,200 lilac shrubs spanning more than 500 varieties bloom across 22 acres. Free to attend, the ten-day festival combines the arboretum's flowering collection with live music on multiple stages, a juried art show, a parade, road races, food vendors, and family programming, drawing more than 500,000 visitors each spring.

In 1888, Rochester nurserymen George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry gave the city 20 acres of rolling land that would become Highland Park, one of the nation's first municipal arboretums, later refined under the guidance of landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted.
