The story

Tour Down Under in Adelaide/Statewide

The Tour Down Under is a professional cycling race through Adelaide and South Australia's wine country, held each January as the traditional opening event of the UCI WorldTour. Launched in 1999 to replace the departed Australian Grand Prix, it became the first WorldTour race outside Europe in 2008 and now runs men's and women's elite fields across stages through the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula.

When the Australian Grand Prix left Adelaide for Melbourne in the late 1990s, the South Australian government went looking for a new marquee event to fill the gap on the state's sporting calendar, and cycling won out.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Adelaide criterium stages are the tour's most spectator-friendly feature, sending the peloton looping repeatedly through the CBD so crowds can watch riders sprint past the same corner multiple times without moving

02

The mystery stays covered

Combined with free roadside viewing along the country stages through the Barossa and Adelaide Hills, the race gives visitors two very different vantage points in one week: dense city-centre energy and quiet vineyard-lined country roads

03

The city starts moving

The event's opening-of-season status also draws strong fields, since teams use it to test form before the northern hemisphere racing calendar begins
