Barunga Festival in Barunga
Barunga Festival is an Aboriginal community sport and cultural festival held each June long weekend in the small Northern Territory community of Barunga, southeast of Katherine. Founded in 1985 by Jawoyn leader Bangardi Robert Lee, it combines a multi-sport carnival, traditional activities, live music and cultural exchange, and was the site of the 1988 Barunga Statement presented to Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
In 1985, Jawoyn leader Bangardi Robert Lee organised the first Barunga Sport and Cultural Festival in the small Aboriginal community of Barunga, roughly 80 kilometres southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory, intending to create a forum where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities could share culture, compete in sport and discuss issues affecting their communities.
