The story

Floriade Canberra in Canberra

Floriade began in 1988 as a one-off Canberra anniversary celebration inspired by the Netherlands' Keukenhof gardens, then became an annual fixture. Run each September into October at Commonwealth Park on Lake Burley Griffin, it plants hundreds of thousands of bulbs into a new themed design every year, drawing around 300,000 visitors and an evening NightFest program of light installations and live music.

Floriade began in 1988 as a one-off celebration marking both Canberra's 75th anniversary and Australia's Bicentenary of European settlement, the brainchild of landscape designer Christiaan Slotemaker de Bruine, who drew direct inspiration from the world-renowned Keukenhof gardens in the Netherlands.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

As the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere, Floriade operates at a scale few similar events attempt outside Europe, with an entirely new design theme conceived and planted from scratch each year rather than a repeating display

02

The mystery stays covered

Its lakeside Commonwealth Park setting, framed by the National Carillon and Canberra's institutional skyline, gives the floral displays a genuinely distinctive backdrop unlike a typical botanic garden

03

The city starts moving

The addition of Floriade NightFest extends the experience well past a simple daytime garden visit, using lighting design and live entertainment to transform the same beds into an evening spectacle with an entirely different mood
