The story

National Folk Festival in Canberra

Held every Easter since 1992 at Exhibition Park in Canberra, the National Folk Festival is Australia's longest-running folk music event, tracing back to a 1967 gathering in Melbourne. Multiple stages, dance floors, workshops and a sprawling market and campground host traditional and contemporary folk, world music, bush bands and dance across the five-day long weekend.

Australia's National Folk Festival traces back to a small gathering called the Port Phillip District Folk Music Festival, held at Melbourne Teachers' College on 11-12 February 1967.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Australian festivals can claim an unbroken history stretching back to 1967, and the National Folk Festival's decades of touring between state capitals before settling in Canberra give it a genuinely national character rather than a single city's local event

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Easter timing at EPIC's large showground facilities allows an unusually broad program to run simultaneously: formal concert stages, open dance floors, hands-on instrument and craft workshops, and informal late-night jam sessions around the campground, all happening at once across the site

03

The city starts moving

On-site camping means many attendees treat it as a genuine folk community gathering rather than a day-trip event, with informal music-making continuing well past when the official program ends each night
