Dark Mofo in Hobart
Dark Mofo is Hobart's winter arts festival, run by the Museum of Old and New Art, built around fire, light installations and confronting contemporary art rather than conventional summer festival fare. Highlights include the communal Winter Feast night market, the nocturnal Dark Park art trail, and the festival's closing event, the Nude Solstice Swim, where thousands plunge into the icy River Derwent at dawn on the winter solstice.
Dark Mofo emerged from Hobart's Museum of Old and New Art as a deliberate inversion of the traditional summer arts festival, choosing instead to lean into the darkness, cold and short days of the Tasmanian winter.
