The story

Melbourne Fringe Festival in Melbourne

Born from the 1982 collapse of the Pram Factory theatre collective, Melbourne Fringe runs an open-access model where any artist can register a show, making it a key launching platform for emerging performers. Now based at Trades Hall since 2019, the festival spreads hundreds of shows across pop-up venues, pubs and theatres for three to four weeks each September and October.

Melbourne Fringe grew out of the demise of the Pram Factory, the influential home of the Australian Performing Group, when a loose collective of independent artists formed the Fringe Network in 1982 and invited anyone interested to help build it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its open-access structure is genuinely distinctive: rather than a curated program selected by an artistic director, virtually any artist can register and find a venue slot, meaning the festival's identity is shaped collectively by whoever chooses to take part that year

02

The mystery stays covered

That model has made it one of Australia's most important discovery platforms for new comedy, theatre and cabaret talent, with many now-prominent performers having started in small Fringe venues early in their careers

03

The city starts moving

Its home at Trades Hall, Australia's oldest surviving trade union building, gives the festival a genuinely historic and community-rooted headquarters that operates as a year-round arts venue beyond the festival season itself
