Stawell Gift in Stawell
Australia's oldest and richest short footrace, the Stawell Gift has run at Central Park in the Grampians region since 1878, missing only a handful of years. Sprinters race a handicapped 120-metre final on natural grass each Easter Monday, with staggered starting marks based on form, drawing elite athletes and country crowds to a carnival steeped in gold-rush betting tradition.
Gold miners racing each other for a nugget donated by the local publican gave Stawell its first Gift in 1878, and the handicap sprint has run in the small Grampians town in all but five years since.
