Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in Sydney to Hobart

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has run every Boxing Day since 1945, sending the fleet out of Sydney Harbour on a 628 nautical mile offshore race across the notoriously rough Bass Strait to Hobart's Constitution Dock. Organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, it draws huge harbourside crowds at the start and is followed closely via tracking as boats battle for line honours and the handicap title.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race began almost by accident in 1945, when a group of sailors from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia planned what they thought would be a leisurely cruise to Tasmania and turned it into a race instead, starting a tradition that has run every year since and become one of the most demanding offshore yacht races in the world.
