Bregenz Festival in Bregenz
Bregenz Festival stages large-scale opera on a purpose-built floating stage on Lake Constance, rebuilt from a permanent concrete core with an entirely new set every two years. Alongside the outdoor spectacle, indoor performances and chamber works run through the Festspielhaus and the town for a multi-week summer season.
The Bregenz Festival's lake stage began as two gravel barges lashed together in 1946, an improvised platform for a first postwar performance, and the improvisation stuck: it has staged opera on the water every summer since.
