Erzbergrodeo in Eisenerz
Erzbergrodeo is an extreme off-road motorcycle race held inside the active Erzberg iron ore mine near Eisenerz, Styria, founded in 1995 by Karl Katoch and organized under Red Bull sponsorship since its first edition drew 120 riders. The Iron Road Prologue qualifies riders for Sunday's mass-start main race across the mine's brutal terraced terrain, widely regarded as hard enduro's toughest single-day test.
Erzbergrodeo was born in 1995 out of an idea by Karl Katoch, a Vienna municipal official who saw potential for an extreme motorcycle race inside the active Erzberg iron ore mine near Eisenerz in Styria, an open-pit quarry whose terraced, reddish-brown terrain looks unlike anywhere else in Europe.
