Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in Innsbruck

The Innsbruck Festival of Early Music grew out of concerts organized by musicologist Otto Ulf at Ambras Castle from 1963 and was formally established in 1976. It specializes in historically informed performances of late Renaissance, baroque and early classical music, centered on an annual staged baroque opera or oratorio, held across venues including Ambras Castle's Spanish Hall, the Tyrolean State Theatre and the Hofburg Imperial Palace.

Musicologist Otto Ulf organized a concert at Ambras Castle in 1963 to mark the 600th anniversary of Margaret, Countess of Tyrol's bequest of Tyrol to the Austrian dukes, and the concerts he continued to stage there over the following years eventually grew into a full festival, formally established in 1976 with Ulf serving as its first artistic director.
