The story

International Brucknerfest Linz in Linz

The International Brucknerfest Linz is Austria's autumn showcase for the symphonic legacy of composer Anton Bruckner, staged at the Brucknerhaus on the Danube since 1974, the year the hall itself opened with Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic performing Bruckner's Seventh. Weeks of orchestral concerts, recitals, and contemporary commissions run each September and October.

The Brucknerhaus concert hall on the Danube opened on 23 March 1974 with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in Anton Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, and the International Brucknerfest was launched the same year on the initiative of the hall's artistic director, Horst Stadlmayr, growing directly out of that opening concert.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals anywhere are so directly tied to a single building's inaugural concert: the Brucknerfest began the same year the Brucknerhaus opened, with the hall's opening performance of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony effectively founding the festival's identity

02

The mystery stays covered

Its terraced, Finnish-designed auditorium was purpose-built for large-scale orchestral sound, giving visiting symphony orchestras an acoustic showcase rare outside Vienna

03

The city starts moving

The festival has held a fixed place beside the Salzburg and Vienna festivals in the national cultural calendar since 1977, and its programming increasingly sets Bruckner's monumental symphonic tradition against contemporary and experimental commissions rather than treating him as historical furniture
