Salzburg Christmas Market in Salzburg
Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz traces its roots to a fifteenth-century trading market and a seventeenth-century Nikolaimarkt, with the modern continuous version running since 1974 beneath the cathedral's twin towers and Hohensalzburg Fortress in the heart of the UNESCO-listed old town, drawing shoppers to stalls of handcrafted nativity figures, ornaments, and mulled wine each winter.
Cathedral Square in Salzburg has hosted some form of Advent market since the late fifteenth century, when a seasonal trading event known as the Tandlmarkt brought goods to the square in front of the city's baroque cathedral.
