The story

Salzburg Whitsun Festival in Salzburg

The Salzburg Whitsun Festival began in 1973 as the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts, created by Herbert von Karajan as a Berlin Philharmonic showcase timed for the Pentecost holiday weekend. Renamed in 1997 and transformed since 2012 under artistic director Cecilia Bartoli into a themed festival built around staged opera productions, it runs over the Whitsun weekend each late spring at venues including the Grosses Festspielhaus.

Karajan created the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts in 1973, initially conceived as a compact series of repeat or complementary performances by the Berlin Philharmonic aimed partly at audiences who had been unable to secure tickets for his Easter Festival earlier in the year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Cecilia Bartoli's leadership since 2012 gives the festival a distinctly curator-driven identity, with each edition built around a specific theme, composer or historical figure rather than a fixed repertoire format, producing staged operas that have gone on to commercial release

02

The mystery stays covered

Bartoli's own history with the festival, having sung there in 1987 at Karajan's personal invitation, adds a rare continuity between the event's founding era and its current artistic direction

03

The city starts moving

Concentrated into a single Pentecost long weekend rather than spread across weeks like Salzburg's other festivals, the Whitsun Festival also offers a more compact, intensive experience, with staged opera and concert programming built tightly around one unifying theme each year
