Popfest Wien in Vienna
Popfest Wien is a free, multi-day showcase of Austrian pop music centered on Karlsplatz, with dozens of acts spread across open-air stages and unconventional indoor venues including the baroque Karlskirche, the Wien Museum, the Technical University and the performance space brut Wien. Grown from a 2008 concert series held during a European football championship, free admission has kept the crowd broad rather than niche since its 2010 launch.
Popfest Wien traces back to summer 2008, when a project group called karlsplatz.org ran a concert series on Karlsplatz timed to coincide with the Euro 2008 football championship, testing whether Vienna's underused central square could carry a music program of its own.
