The story

International Jazz Day Baku in Baku

Baku has marked UNESCO's global International Jazz Day (30 April) with its own gala concert since 2018, organized by saxophonist Rain Sultanov and often paired with the 'I Am a Jazzman!' young-performers competition award ceremony. It is a single-evening, single-venue concert, distinct from the city's separate, longer Jazz and Wine Festival held in the same spring window.

UNESCO designated 30 April as International Jazz Day in 2011, and Baku has marked the date with its own concert since 2018, organized by saxophonist Rain Sultanov, who also runs the city's longer-running Baku Jazz Festival, one of the largest live-music events in the South Caucasus since 2005.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its link to UNESCO's global International Jazz Day, one worldwide framework of concerts held the same evening in cities on every continent, gives Baku's edition a specific international frame rather than a purely local music-festival identity

02

The mystery stays covered

The concert has regularly combined a visiting international jazz artist with Azerbaijani musicians and a local orchestra, and recent editions have folded in the gala and awards for the 'I Am a Jazzman!' young-performers competition, adding a competitive element most single-night jazz concerts do not have
