Uzeyir Hajibeyli International Music Festival in Baku
Named for the composer of the first opera in the Islamic world and of Azerbaijan's national anthem, this Baku festival has run annually since 2009. Organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, it stages four days of orchestral concerts, opera, exhibitions, and master classes centered on Uzeyir Hajibeyli's mugham-infused classical repertoire and its influence on later composers.
Uzeyir Hajibeyli wrote the first opera composed in the Islamic world, 'Leyli and Majnun,' in 1908, fusing Western operatic form with mugham's modal vocal tradition, and later composed the music for Azerbaijan's national anthem.
