World of Mugham International Festival in Baku
World of Mugham showcases Azerbaijan's UNESCO-recognized traditional modal music once every two years in Baku, centered at the purpose-built International Mugham Center. Organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation since 2009, the festival combines a singers' contest, mugham operas, symphonic arrangements, and a scholarly symposium, drawing performers and musicologists from around 40 countries.
Mugham, Azerbaijan's modal, largely improvised traditional music form, holds a place on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Baku's 'World of Mugham' festival was created specifically to showcase it on an international stage.
