The story

Kharibulbul Music Festival in Shusha

Named for a rare orchid symbolic of Shusha, this festival began in 1989 and ran until 1992, when war forced it to relocate elsewhere in Azerbaijan. It returned to Shusha in May 2022, after the city came back under Azerbaijani control, and has continued annually since, drawing international folk, classical, and mugham musicians to the city's historic quarter.

The Kharibulbul Music Festival takes its name from a rare orchid found only in the mountains around Shusha, long treated as a symbol of the city itself.

The place changes

The festival's return to Shusha in May 2022, its first edition there since 1992, gives it particular resonance: performances are staged amid a historic quarter still undergoing restoration after decades of inaccessibility

Programming draws mugham singers, folk ensembles, and classical musicians from multiple countries, continuing a format established in 1989 to honor khananda Seyid Shushinski

03

The city starts moving

By its 9th edition, the festival had expanded to include venues in nearby Lachin, broadening its geographic footprint within the wider Karabakh region
