The story

Bimini Native Fishing Tournament in Bimini

Founded in the early 1950s by native Biminites and run ever since by the Progressive Sporting Club, the Bimini Native Fishing Tournament is a three-day, all-species dock tournament out of the Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina that rewards local fishing knowledge over offshore firepower, distinct from Bimini's bigger international billfish series.

The Bimini Native Fishing Tournament began in the early 1950s, founded by a group of native Biminites who wanted a competition built around their own community rather than the visiting sport-fishing fleets the island was already famous for.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is Bimini's own tournament, not a visiting sportfishing circuit passing through: it was created by native islanders specifically to celebrate their own fishing skill, and the Progressive Sporting Club has kept it locally organized for more than seventy years

02

The mystery stays covered

The scoring format is what sets it apart from marquee billfish events - any fish counts at the dock, which favors reef, flats and inshore knowledge that longtime Biminites have built over generations, rather than rewarding only offshore blue-water captures

03

The city starts moving

Coming during the same season many families return to the island, it doubles as an informal homecoming, with a welcome reception, closing cocktail party and community-wide participation that outsiders are welcomed into rather than watching from the sidelines
