George Town Cruising Regatta in George Town/Elizabeth Harbour
The George Town Cruising Regatta is an informal, weeks-long gathering organized by the community of sailboats anchored in Elizabeth Harbour each winter, mixing casual races between cruising yachts with beach games, potlucks and a talent show on Stocking Island. Coordinated by the sailors themselves over VHF radio rather than a fixed committee, it runs alongside, but is organizationally separate from, the formal National Family Island Regatta held in the same harbor.
Each winter, as the number of anchored sailboats in Elizabeth Harbour swells into the hundreds, the loose community of cruisers wintering off George Town organizes its own regatta, distinct from the government-run National Family Island Regatta that uses the same harbor for traditional Bahamian sloop racing later in the year.
