The story

Rolleville Homecoming and Regatta in Rolleville

Rolleville, a small settlement on Great Exuma, hosts one of the Bahamas' oldest homecoming and regatta weekends, running more than eighty years under the Progressive Sporting Club. Class B and C native sloops race the anchorage on Friday and Saturday of the early-August weekend, while the settlement fills with a talent and beauty pageant, greasy pole climbing, games and food stalls as Exuma natives return for the reunion.

Rolleville is a small settlement on the northern end of Great Exuma, and once a year it hosts one of the longest-running regatta and homecoming weekends in the Bahamian family islands, dating back more than eighty editions to a local sailing club formed in the 1940s.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Rolleville event stands out for its longevity and its unbroken link to the same local organization that founded it more than eight decades ago, which keeps the sloop racing rooted in real island rivalries rather than a revived or reconstructed tradition

02

The mystery stays covered

Because the homecoming and the regatta happen together, the crowd on shore is not a generic festival audience but largely people with direct family ties to Rolleville, which gives the pageant, the games and the food stalls a texture that is hard to manufacture

03

The city starts moving

Visitors get to see a working sailing culture still passed down through Exuma families, alongside the informal, unhurried social rhythm of a settlement reunion rather than a ticketed event
