The story

Raj Punnah Festival in Bandarban

Raj Punnah is the Bohmong Circle's annual tribute and jhum-tax ceremony at the Rajbari compound in Bandarban, running since 1875, when mouza headmen and karbaris formally pay allegiance to the hereditary chief. A wider cultural fair of dance, music and craft stalls from across the hill districts' communities surrounds the formal ceremony.

Each Raj Punnah, headmen from more than a hundred mouzas and roughly a thousand karbaris travel to Bandarban's Rajbari compound to pay jhum cultivation tax and traditional tribute to the Bohmong Circle chief, a ceremony of allegiance that has run since 1875.

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few events anywhere let a visitor watch a still-functioning hereditary tribute ceremony: headmen from over a hundred mouzas and roughly a thousand karbaris formally paying tax and allegiance to a recognized tribal chief, a structure of semi-autonomous governance that has survived from the colonial era into the present

02

The mystery stays covered

The event draws participants from eleven distinct hill communities, making the Rajbari compound one of the most ethnically layered single gatherings in the Chittagong Hill Tracts
