Bengal Classical Music Festival in Dhaka
The Bengal Classical Music Festival is a free, five-night stadium event in Dhaka, launched in 2012 by Bengal Foundation to bring Hindustani classical music to a mass outdoor audience. Sessions run long and late, built around extended traditional recitals rather than short festival sets, organized around scale and duration as much as artistry.
Abul Khair, the businessman behind Bengal Foundation, wanted to test whether Hindustani classical music, usually treated as an elite art form, could pull a genuinely mass audience if it was staged as a free, large-scale spectacle rather than an insiders' recital, and the Bengal Classical Music Festival, launched in 2012, was the answer.
