The story

Bengal Classical Music Festival in Dhaka

The Bengal Classical Music Festival is a free, five-night stadium event in Dhaka, launched in 2012 by Bengal Foundation to bring Hindustani classical music to a mass outdoor audience. Sessions run long and late, built around extended traditional recitals rather than short festival sets, organized around scale and duration as much as artistry.

Abul Khair, the businessman behind Bengal Foundation, wanted to test whether Hindustani classical music, usually treated as an elite art form, could pull a genuinely mass audience if it was staged as a free, large-scale spectacle rather than an insiders' recital, and the Bengal Classical Music Festival, launched in 2012, was the answer.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This festival's defining trait is duration and scale rather than novelty: five consecutive nights of free, large-audience classical recitals at a stadium venue, with individual performances kept to their traditional extended length rather than shortened for a festival format

02

The mystery stays covered

Organizers describe it as among the largest classical music festivals in the world by performer count on a single stage, audience size and total duration, a framing built specifically around proving that classical music can draw a mass, free-entry crowd rather than an insider audience
