Pahela Falgun Festival in Dhaka/Nationwide
Pahela Falgun, Bangladesh's first-day-of-spring marker, began as a 1991 student gathering at Dhaka University's Bakultola and has grown into a citywide dress-up day: yellow and orange 'bashonti' saris and panjabis, flower exchanges, and crowds concentrated around TSC, Curzon Hall and Shahbagh. Because it falls on 14 February, it now shares the streets with Valentine's Day.
Pahela Falgun's modern form traces to 1991, when students of Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts began marking the first day of the Bengali month of Falgun with music and recitation at Bakultola, the shaded ground beside the faculty building.
