A single-day, clockwise circumnavigation of Barbados by sailing yacht, tracing its roots to informal nineteenth-century schooner races and formalized as an organized event in 1936. The course mixes calm west-coast reaching with rough Atlantic conditions on the exposed east coast, making it a genuine ocean-racing test rather than a scenic cruise.
Sailors have raced around Barbados since the nineteenth century, when trading-schooner captains competed informally for bragging rights on bringing cargo into Bridgetown first; the first organized version of that race, held on 1 January 1936 with five schooners entered, is the direct ancestor of today's event.
