The story

House of Soca Tent in Bridgetown

Barbados's longest-running calypso tent, tracing back roughly to 1980 and staged at a vocational school auditorium in Bridgetown. It has a distinctive history of platforming disabled performers, including a multiple-time Blind Calypso Monarch, alongside a junior development programme training new talent for future seasons of Crop Over calypso.

House of Soca is old enough that a 2015 anniversary report already put it at 35 years running, which places its founding around 1980 and makes it, by most local accounts, Barbados's longest-standing calypso tent.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few calypso tents can claim four and a half decades of continuous operation, and House of Soca's roster includes a performer who was the first differently-abled finalist in Pic-O-De-Crop history and a multiple-time Blind Calypso Monarch winner, giving the tent a genuinely distinct performer lineage rather than a generic tent-show cast

02

The mystery stays covered

Its junior programme also feeds younger performers into the tradition, making the tent both a heritage institution and an active training ground
