The story

Avtyuki Humor Festival in Avtyuki/Kalinkavichy District

Villages named Malye and Bolshie Avtyuki, outside Kalinkavichy in the Gomel region, host Belarus's best-known folk humor festival every second July. Held since 1995, the day opens with a mock reconciliation between the two hamlets and moves through satirical monologues, a Miss Avtyuki pageant, comic sporting events and exhibition football, drawing humorists from Russia, Ukraine and Moldova alongside Belarusian performers to a village more used to farmland than festival crowds.

In the Gomel region village cluster of Bolshie and Malye Avtyuki, a mock rivalry between two hamlets has grown into one of Belarus's most distinctive folk-humor gatherings.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

01 Reconciliation opening: the whole day begins with a staged truce ceremony between Malye and Bolshie Avtyuki, the joke villages the festival is built around

02

The mystery stays covered

02 Regional humor lineage: Avtyuki is treated locally as a Belarusian answer to Gabrovo, Odessa and Sorochyntsi, places whose identity rests on self-mocking folk comedy

03

The city starts moving

03 Comic sport: the Avtyuki Olympic Games and exhibition football matches turn athletic competition into performance

04

The water draws everyone in

04 Cross-border guests: humorists travel in from Russia, Ukraine and Moldova alongside Belarusian satirists

05

The old stones answer

05 Biennial rhythm: because it only happens every second year, timing a visit takes more planning than an annual festival
