The story

Brussels Marathon in Brussels

The Brussels Marathon, first run in 1984 and revived in 2004 after a decade-long hiatus, starts and finishes in Cinquantenaire Park before looping east toward Tervuren through parkland and forest roads. Its autumn date and noticeably smaller field distinguish it from Belgium's bigger, spring-scheduled Ghent Marathon.

The Brussels Marathon started in 1984, disappeared entirely between 1995 and 2003, and only returned in 2004 once ING Belgium and the Royal Belgian Athletics League relaunched it as part of a sponsored running series, a gap that makes it younger in continuous practice than its founding date suggests.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few European capital marathons route runners through as much parkland as Brussels does, with sections through the Bois de la Cambre, the Capuchin Forest and the Royal Belgian Golf Club grounds rather than staying on city avenues

02

The mystery stays covered

The race also has a documented decade-long absence, 1995 to 2003, before its 2004 relaunch under new sponsorship, a gap uncommon among long-running European marathons and one that shapes its comparatively modest current scale and its quieter, easier-to-navigate crowds along the route
