The story

Sjock Festival in Gierle

Sjock is a small, volunteer-run festival in Gierle that has run since 1976, when it began in a parish house garden under the slogan one stage, one party. Now staged on dedicated grounds known as Poeyelheide with around forty bands a year, it keeps a narrow, subculture-specific booking policy: punk rock, rockabilly, garage rock and surf music, rather than a general rock lineup, run entirely by unpaid volunteers.

Sjock started in 1976 in the garden of a parish house in Gierle, under a slogan that has stuck with it ever since: one stage, one party.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The organizing model is the standout feature: Sjock has been built and run each year by volunteer Sjockers rather than a professional promoter, a structure that has held for roughly fifty years without the festival growing into a commercial operation

02

The mystery stays covered

Its booking policy is also narrower than a typical rock festival, focused specifically on punk rock, rockabilly, garage rock and surf music rather than a broad genre mix

03

The city starts moving

Despite its small-village Gierle setting and modest scale, it draws visitors from across Europe, giving it an outsized reputation within underground and DIY punk circles relative to its physical size
