The story

Liege-Bastogne-Liege in Liege/Bastogne

The oldest of cycling's five Monuments, first run in 1892 and nicknamed La Doyenne, Liege-Bastogne-Liege crosses the forested Ardennes hills of Wallonia on a long out-and-back route between Liege and Bastogne. Its punchy, cumulative climbs and quieter rural crowds set it apart from Flanders' cobbled classics.

Leon Houa won the first edition of a race in 1892 that predates the Tour de France by eleven years, earning it the nickname La Doyenne, French for the eldest.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Predating the Tour de France itself, Liege-Bastogne-Liege has been run since 1892, making it the oldest of cycling's Monuments and giving it a claim to history none of the sport's other one-day races can match

02

The mystery stays covered

Its difficulty comes from cumulative attrition over a string of short Ardennes climbs like La Redoute rather than one decisive mountain or cobbled sector, which tends to reward strong, experienced riders - Eddy Merckx's record five wins reflects that pattern

03

The city starts moving

A women's edition joined the UCI Women's World Tour in 2017, the second Monument after the Tour of Flanders to add one
