Garifuna Settlement Day in Dangriga and Garifuna communities

Dangriga hosts the fullest version of Belize's Garifuna Settlement Day, a November 19 national holiday commemorating the 1832 arrival of Garifuna settlers on the southern coast. The day opens before sunrise with the Yurumein reenactment, dugout canoes carrying drummers and singers ashore, then moves into church services, a town parade and food built around cassava and coconut. Smaller reenactments also take place in Hopkins, Seine Bight and Punta Gorda.

Thomas Vincent Ramos organized the first public commemoration of the Garinagu's arrival in Belize back in 1941, calling it Carib Disembarkation Day, and the event he started has grown into one of the country's largest annual gatherings.
