International Renaissance and Baroque Music Festival

Founded in 1996 by the Asociacion Pro Arte y Cultura, this biennial festival fills the restored eighteenth-century Jesuit mission churches of Bolivia's Chiquitania with baroque and renaissance music drawn from thousands of sacred scores discovered during the churches' restoration. Each edition runs across roughly ten days with more than a hundred free concerts in towns including San Jose de Chiquitos, Concepcion and San Ignacio de Velasco, drawing musicians from sixteen or more countries.

Restorers working on Chiquitania's Jesuit mission churches in the late twentieth century uncovered thousands of pages of baroque sheet music, more than five thousand in Chiquitos alone, written between the 1600s and 1700s by European missionary composers and by the Indigenous musicians they trained.
