The story

Chiquitos Missions Festival in Chiquitos

The Festival Internacional de Musica Renacentista y Barroca Americana Misiones de Chiquitos is staged across Santa Cruz, the Jesuit Missions and Tarija, rooted in the Chiquitos missions built between 1691 and 1767, where over 5,500 sheets of 17th- and 18th-century sacred music were discovered. First held in 1996, the 15th edition ran April 17-26, 2026, with more than 130 concerts and over 1,000 artists from 16 countries.

Each year, the festival built around the Misiones de Chiquitos returns to a story that began not with a modern festival organizer but with an archival discovery: more than 5,500 sheets of sacred music, composed in the Renaissance and Baroque styles and dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, had survived inside the Jesuit mission towns of Chiquitos, built between 1691 and 1767.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes this festival remarkable is the discovery that underpins it: thousands of sheets of Baroque and Renaissance sacred music, over 5,500 pages, survived in the Chiquitos missions for centuries before being uncovered, giving the festival a genuine historical archive to draw performance material from rather than a purely modern repertoire choice

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by the Pro-Arte y Cultura Association, it spans Santa Cruz, the Jesuit Missions themselves and Tarija, connecting the UNESCO-recognized mission towns, designated World Cultural Heritage in 1990, to a living musical program

03

The city starts moving

Its 2026 edition alone staged more than 130 concerts with over 1,000 artists from 16 countries, a scale that has led many to call it Bolivia's most important cultural and musical event
