The story

Orchid Festival Concepcion in Concepcion

Concepcion, one of Bolivia's restored Jesuit mission towns in the Chiquitania, has run its Festival de la Orquidea every October since 2001, built around the Cattleya nobilior orchid native to the surrounding forest. Exhibitions pair orchid displays with Chiquitano weaving and woodcarving workshops, Baroque music concerts and traditional dance. Now recognized as part of Bolivia's cultural and natural patrimony, it works well combined with a visit to Concepcion's UNESCO-listed mission church.

Concepcion is one of the best-preserved Jesuit mission towns of Bolivia's Chiquitania, and since 2001 it has built an October festival around the orchid that grows wild in the surrounding forest.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival stands out for tying a genuine ecological asset, the native orchid population of the surrounding Chiquitania forest, to the cultural infrastructure of a Jesuit mission town rather than treating flowers as a standalone attraction

02

The mystery stays covered

Baroque concerts performed in or near the mission church echo the same musical archive that anchors the region's larger Misiones de Chiquitos festival, and Chiquitano weaving and woodcarving workshops connect the event to crafts still practiced in surrounding communities

03

The city starts moving

More than two decades of continuous editions, plus formal recognition as natural, cultural and immaterial patrimony, give the festival a depth that a one-off flower show would not have
