Festival del Tinku in Macha, Potosi, centers on the ritual combat for which the town is best known in Bolivia: men and women from rival ayllus fight in the belief that blood offered in combat feeds Pachamama and secures a fertile harvest. Macha, a small town in the Chayanta province of Potosi department, hosts one of the most intense ritual events in the Andes: a tinku, a ceremonial encounter where men and sometimes women from rival ayllus (traditional community groups) fight each other with bare fists, and in the roughest moments, wrapped cloth, stones or slingshots.
