Pujllay Tarabuco in Tarabuco

Pujllay is the Yampara culture's rainy-season ritual, centered on the boisterous spirit Tata Pujllay, and in Tarabuco it also carries a popular local layer honoring the 1816 Battle of Jumbate against Spanish royalist troops. Dancers in elaborately woven textiles and sequined helmet-hats move through the town plaza to pinkillu flutes and charangos. UNESCO inscribed Pujllay, alongside the related Ayarichi tradition, on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

Pujllay is the Yampara culture's principal ritual marking the start of the rainy season, and in Tarabuco it doubles as a tribute to a specific historical victory, a combination that gives the festival two layers most visitors never fully untangle.
