MESS International Theatre Festival, founded in 1960 as the Festival of Small and Experimental Stages of Yugoslavia, is considered the oldest continuously running theatre festival in the Balkans. It relaunched inside besieged Sarajevo in the 1990s as a deliberate act of cultural resistance, hosting figures like Susan Sontag. It now runs every October with experimental and international productions across the city's theatres.

MESS International Theatre Festival started in 1960 as the Festival of Small and Experimental Stages of Yugoslavia, founded by Jurislav Korenic to showcase the country's experimental theatre companies outside the mainstream repertoire - the acronym MES stuck as a name even after Yugoslavia dissolved.
