Jwaneng Desert Festival in Jwaneng
Jwaneng Desert Festival draws on the Kalahari setting of Botswana's company mining town, built around the Debswana diamond mine opened in 1982, mixing music and desert-themed activities for a workforce community with few independent cultural institutions of its own. Sourcing stays thin, with no confirmed organizer, venue or founding date.
Jwaneng exists because of a single mine: Debswana opened the Jwaneng diamond mine in 1982, and it has since become one of the richest diamond mines in the world by value, with the surrounding town built specifically to house workers and their families on the edge of the Kalahari.
